Viettel Advances 6G Development Roadmap, Targeting Real-World Trials and Next-Generation Connectivity

Viettel is accelerating its development of next-generation telecommunications technologies, with plans to commercialize 5G-Advanced equipment by 2027, begin testing 6G systems on live networks between 2028 and 2030, and conduct a pre-commercial 6G call in early 2029.

Building on its experience in telecommunications network operations, equipment manufacturing, and international technology partnerships, Viettel aims to strengthen its capabilities across the full development cycle of advanced wireless networks.

The initiative reflects Viettel’s strategic focus on developing core telecommunications technologies while contributing to the evolution of global digital infrastructure.

BUILDING ON VIETTEL’S 5G TECHNOLOGY CAPABILITIES

Viettel’s 6G development strategy builds on its existing experience in researching, developing, manufacturing, and deploying telecommunications equipment.

The company has deployed its self-developed 5G network equipment across multiple locations in Vietnam and expanded its international reach through initial equipment exports to India and the United Arab Emirates.

Viettel has also developed telecommunications systems used across its domestic and international networks, including its virtualized Online Charging System (vOCS).

These developments provide a technical and operational foundation for the company’s next phase of telecommunications innovation.

By 2027, Viettel plans to commercialize 5G-Advanced equipment using open and virtualized network architectures. Its development targets include improved uplink coverage, reduced network latency, more precise positioning, and lower energy consumption.

For telecommunications operators and enterprise customers, these advances could support more responsive connectivity, efficient network operations, and applications requiring greater precision and reliability.

COLLABORATING WITH QUALCOMM ON NEXT-GENERATION 6G TECHNOLOGY

An important component of Viettel’s 6G strategy is its collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies.

In July 2026, Viettel became the first partner selected to participate in Qualcomm’s 6G Platform Early Access Program. The agreement enables early access to chipset platforms and development tools, supporting research and equipment development ahead of broader commercial availability.

Under the collaboration, Qualcomm provides the chipset technology platform, while Viettel is responsible for researching, designing, developing, integrating, manufacturing, and testing 6G base station equipment.

Both companies will also collaborate on interoperability assessment, product validation, and performance optimization under practical operating conditions.

The partnership builds on their previous cooperation in 5G Open RAN technology, where jointly developed solutions have already been deployed across Viettel’s telecommunications network.

Early access to 6G technology platforms is expected to support Viettel’s product development activities as the underlying technologies continue to evolve.

TOWARD REAL-WORLD 6G TRIALS AND AI-NATIVE NETWORKS

Viettel has outlined a roadmap to manufacture and test 6G telecommunications equipment on live networks between 2028 and 2030.

A key milestone is the planned first pre-commercial 6G call in early 2029, using systems and equipment researched, developed, and manufactured by Viettel.

Beyond higher data transmission speeds, 6G is being developed as an AI-native network architecture that integrates three major technology areas: advanced connectivity, wide-area sensing, and high-performance computing.

This approach could create new opportunities for intelligent network management, industrial automation, connected devices, and emerging enterprise applications.

Viettel and Qualcomm have also identified potential areas for broader technological cooperation, including high-performance computing, data center infrastructure, sensing technologies, autonomous AI devices, and next-generation radio systems.

While commercial 6G networks remain under development, these efforts demonstrate how telecommunications innovation is increasingly connected with AI, computing infrastructure, and enterprise digital transformation.

STRENGTHENING GLOBAL TELECOMMUNICATIONS COLLABORATION

Viettel’s 6G roadmap reflects its ambition to participate in the development of future telecommunications technologies, from foundational research and equipment manufacturing to real-world deployment and international collaboration.

For Viettel America, these initiatives demonstrate the potential for closer engagement between Viettel’s technology capabilities and the U.S. innovation ecosystem.

As the industry moves toward AI-native networks and increasingly integrated digital infrastructure, collaboration among telecommunications operators, semiconductor companies, equipment manufacturers, and technology partners will be essential.

Through continued investment in 5G-Advanced, 6G, and related technologies, Viettel aims to advance its telecommunications R&D capabilities while expanding opportunities for international technology cooperation.

The development of next-generation connectivity represents an important part of Viettel’s long-term commitment to technology innovation and the evolution of digital infrastructure across global markets.
